THE PROFOUND WORK OF IFS Therapy INTENSIVES AND HOW THIS RELATES TO ADULT CHILDREN OF EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE PARENTS

As a therapist, I remain grateful for the deep and meaningful work I get to do. Over the years, I’ve gained profound clarity about the unique struggles of many of my clients, which has forever altered my approach, the modalities I use and the way in which I believe I can deliver the most effective and transformative services to help them heal.

As I have said in this blog post, a significant number of my clients, without any deliberate selection on my part, exhibit similar patterns, have faced comparable challenges, and arrive with related goals: to understand why they feel the way they do, to find a way to return to themselves, to heal from pains they don’t quite understand and to work through past traumatic experiences. A common thread among these individuals is their experience of being raised by emotionally immature parents (EIPs).

Despite impressive resumes and a lifetime of courageous acts, these clients often grapple with deep-seated insecurities about their self-worth and accomplishments. Self-compassion is often hard to find and they can remain stuck in people-pleasing, self-doubt and low confidence patterns.

As a practitioner, I’ve met hundreds of introspective, hard-working, and kind individuals who share these struggles. These high-achievers frequently confront anxieties, relationship difficulties, and low self-esteem. Instead of self-compassion, they live with the staunchest of inner critics, perfectionist tendencies, and imposter syndrome.

THE POWER OF IFS FOR CLIENTS WHO HAVE EMOTIONALLY IMMATURE PARENTS

This recurring pattern led me to discover the profound effectiveness of the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, particularly for adult children of emotionally immature parents (ACEIPs). Integrating IFS into my practice has been nothing short of revolutionary, offering a radically compassionate approach to healing that has resonated deeply with my clients. As time has gone on, I have also recognised an even deeper way of healing using this amazing modality, and it’s an approach which serves ACEIPs particularly effectively.

Why IFS Therapy Intensives?

IFS Therapy Intensives provide an unparalleled opportunity for deep and focused healing, especially for those who grew up with EIPs. Here’s why they are so powerful for this client group:

1. Deep Dive into Healing:

An IFS Intensive allows for a concentrated and immersive experience, typically spanning from 3 hours to up to 14 hours, over a few consecutive, or close-together, days. This format (which can be adapted to individual client needs and schedules) accelerates the healing process, offering profound transformations that might take months or years with traditional weekly therapy.

2. Addressing Core Wounds:

ACEIPs often carry heavy burdens from their childhoods, including feelings of inadequacy, shame, and emotional loneliness. Given the ongoing nature of a childhood with one or more EIP, these clients can feel overwhelmed by the multitude of experiences and painful memories that have joined them in their adult lives. IFS Intensives provide the space and time to deeply engage with these wounded parts, understand their origins, and begin the process of unburdening them.

3. Creating a Healing Dialogue:

IFS helps clients establish a compassionate dialogue with their internal parts. For ACEIPs, this means giving a voice to those parts that were forced into extreme roles to survive emotionally challenging environments. By acknowledging and healing these parts during an intense time period, clients can speed up the releasing of their pain and move forward with greater ease and freedom. The establishment of a safe and spacious container, held over several days, means that often protectors soften back with greater ease as the process goes on and in addition, less time needs to be spent reporting back the previous week’s events or getting back into the healing ‘zone’.

4. A Personalised and Intensive Space to Land:

Each IFS Intensive with me is tailored to the client’s unique needs; this in and of itself may feel revolutionary to clients who have always had their needs placed second and this can be a powerful first step in the healing journey: investing in yourself and centralising YOU may feel uncomfortable but it’s a growing edge worth exploring.

The process begins with a personalised workbook and a pre-intensive session to hone in on specific areas of focus. This ensures that the intensive is deeply relevant and targeted, leading to more impactful outcomes. Given clients’ childhood experiences, the workbook, which is filled with assessments and background explorations, can also offer myself, as the therapist, a deep insight into their past, meaning that we don’t have to go over as much ground in sessions and can hone in on healing from the get-go.

5. Rapid and Sustainable Results:

Adult Children of EIPs can often struggle with their sense of self, doubting when and how they can have their own opinions and feeling inextricably linked to the wellbeing and ideals of others. Clients often report feeling lighter, more confident, and more connected to their true selves after an IFS Intensive and this can be life-changing for ACEIPs.

The intensive format can lead to quicker breakthroughs and more sustainable healing, helping clients transform their lives, and truly reconnect with who they are at their core, in a relatively short period.

Why Choose an IFS Intensive as an ACEIP?

Adult children of emotionally immature parents often seek answers and healing from their past experiences. Here are some reasons why an IFS Intensive might be the right choice:

Unresolved Trauma:

Many ACEIPs have trauma that regular therapy hasn’t fully addressed. An IFS Intensive can provide the deep healing needed to finally move past these traumatic early experiences.

Accelerated Progress:

For those who feel stuck or in need of rapid change, the intensive format can catalyse significant progress in a short time.

Retreat-Style Healing:

IFS Intensives offer a retreat-like experience, allowing clients to immerse themselves in their healing journey without the need to travel. This can be done online, with guidance to create a supportive retreat environment at home. And for some clients, subject to availability, this can take place in-person in locations across Southeast Asia (please contact me for more information on this limited and bespoke service).

Transform Your Future:

IFS Therapy Intensives offer a powerful pathway for ACEIPs to heal from their past, connect with their true selves, and move forward with greater confidence and self-compassion.

If you resonate with this approach and are ready to embark on a transformative healing journey, I invite you to reach out HERE and explore how an IFS Intensive can support you and when I have availability that will work for your schedule.
